Mental Health Tips for Returning to School After the Holidays
By Kevauna Sterling, ALC
The holiday season is a wonderful time to relax and recharge, but transitioning back to school can feel overwhelming for kids, parents, and teachers alike. As routines shift and expectations rise, prioritizing mental health is essential for a successful return to the classroom.
For Kids:
1. Set Up a Routine: Start adjusting bedtime and wake-up schedules a few days before school starts. Consistency helps reduce anxiety.
2. Practice Self-Compassion: Remind your child it’s okay to feel nervous or overwhelmed. Encourage them to share their feelings with a trusted adult.
3. Break Goals Into Steps: Encourage kids to focus on one task at a time, whether it’s organizing school supplies or completing homework.
For Parents:
1. Open Communication: Check in with your child about their feelings as school approaches. Listen without judgment.
2. Prepare Ahead: Help your child get organized by gathering supplies, setting up a homework station, and reviewing their schedule.
3. Lead by Example: Model healthy habits like mindfulness, exercise, and stress management to show your child how to handle transitions.
For Teachers:
1. Ease Back Into Learning: Start the semester with review sessions and engaging activities to re-establish classroom rapport.
2. Recognize Emotional Needs: Understand that students may need time to adjust emotionally before diving into new material.
3. Collaborate with Families: Maintain open communication with parents about any challenges their child may be facing.
